The museum has well over 8,500 entries in its accessions register. Many of the entries include multiple items so we estimate that we have almost 12,000 objects in our care. We are working to create a digital archive which will be available online although this project is still in its infancy.
Probably the most significant objects in the museum's collection are a pair of brass Bofors shell casings which were fired by one of the guns of 41st Battery of the Manx Regiment at about 1.20p.m. on Sunday 3rd September 1939. This was just over two hours after the declaration of war and was the first time that guns of the British forces fired in the Second World War.
Accession no. MAPS4530
Showing date stamps 2/1939 on the shell case and 3/1939 on the primer.
